This year, set against the backdrop of the current cost of living crisis sweeping the UK and the international community, Brighton Fringe is set to deliver its largest-ever bursary programme, supporting those artists most in need of financial assistance to continue producing and performing work.
Our 2023 bursaries are spread across two waves in line with the two registration periods:

Bird & Blend Tea Co. is an independent, award-winning tea company on a mission to spread happiness & reimagine tea! Pop the kettle on and apply for one of their wonderful bursaries. Bird & Blend Tea Co. is delighted to announce this year’s CommuniTEA 2023 Bursary. The successful recipient of The Bird & Blend CommuniTEA Bursary will receive a Brighton Fringe registration fee paid for, marketing support on the Bird & Blend social media accounts, and rehearsal space at one of the Bird & Blend stores. This bursary is for any artist, organisation, or person trying to include the community in their event by engaging with a local community, being organised by/or benefiting a community group/organisation or the event connects with a community theme/topic.
For the thirteenth year running, the Pebble Trust is supporting Brighton Fringe participants by offering three bursaries to young people wishing to put on an event. This could be in any category and each winner will receive Brighton Fringe Registration fees paid by the Pebble Trust, a minimum of £500 towards production costs, and up to six hours of mentoring sessions with an industry professional.
Every year, the staff at Brighton Fringe each get to enjoy a free Brighton Fringe registration. Some members of the team have taken up the offer, but not everyone at Brighton Fringe is a born performer or producer. Some team members have chosen to offer up their free registration as a bursary for Brighton Fringe 2023 with various criteria.
urbanflo Creative in conjunction with Brighton Fringe is very pleased to announce the ‘Irene Mensah Artist Bursary’ in honour of their dear friend and colleague who sadly passed away in 2013. Applications are invited for this special award, which will be available for community artists based in Brighton & Hove participating in Brighton Fringe 2023. To be considered for the bursary, your project must be considered African & Asian Art Forms, Urban Art Forms, Spoken Word, Physical Theatre, or Visual Art.
South East Dance is delighted to offer a Brighton Fringe Bursary for 2023. The award is open to any artist or company whose Brighton Fringe show includes movement/dance/choreography. The successful recipient will receive the Brighton Fringe registration fee paid for, an artist advisory session with a producer at South East Dance, and in-kind marketing and social media support for your show.
Encore Insure is very pleased to announce the encoreinsure.com Brighton Fringe Bursary Scheme to reflect their support of Fringe performance and the creative zeal of new makers to produce fantastic work without extortionate budgets. The winning events will have their Brighton Fringe 2023 registration fee paid by encoreinsure.com.
Former Fringe staff member and all-around legend Robert Batson has generously offered a bursary for one Fringe event taking part in 2023. The winning event must be from Brighton & Hove. The successful recipient of Bob's Bursary will receive their Brighton Fringe 2023 registration fee paid for, 8-10 hours of artistic grant consultation and writing services, and £150 towards the cost of a BSL interpreter.
A bursary for anyone creating alternative comedy (not traditional stand-up) whose background or identity is underrepresented in this genre. Luke Rollason isn't dead but he'd like to give you some free money, again (in loving memory of the 2022 bursary).
Bird & Blend Tea Co. are delighted to award bursaries to two events that include sustainability in their work. The successful recipients of The Bird & Blend SustainabiliTEA Bursary will receive their Brighton Fringe registration fee paid for, marketing support on the Bird & Blend Tea Co. social media accounts, and rehearsal space at one of the Bird & Blend stores. As Bird & Blend Tea Co. have grown over the years, they are proud to always try to keep people and the planet at the forefront of their decision-making process. But they acknowledge they aren’t perfect - sustainability isn’t easy, it’s an ever-evolving process. This bursary is for any artist, organisation, or person trying to include sustainability in their event in any of the following ways: connecting with sustainability within their event, educating an audience surrounding sustainability topics, or considering sustainability within their event operations (e.g. travel, production, etc).
Brighton & Hove Pride is delighted to offer 5 bursaries to performers/producers in the LGBTQ+ community or allies creating work with an LGBTQ+ narrative for Brighton Fringe 2023. Their mission is to support high-quality, innovative, inspirational, and engaging work to entertain, inform, educate and thereby enrich the cultural life of the LGBTQ+ community and the residents of Brighton & Hove. The 5 successful applicants will each receive £250 towards registration fees and other costs as well as support in kind such as possible rehearsal space, and social media support.
Ironclad Creative CIC, who runs The Ironclad Hub - a free-to-join, global online community for creative people - is delighted to offer a New Writing Bursary for Brighton Fringe 2023. The bursary is open to any Brighton Fringe artist or company whose work is new writing (written within the last two years) and whose writer has a low income. The winner will receive their Brighton Fringe registration fee repaid by Ironclad Creative CIC, a production mentoring session with Ironclad Creative, and at least 6 social media posts about your event.
A second bursary from Ironclad Creative CIC exists to celebrate the memory of Brighton writer and creative Michael Graney who was passionate about writing, the arts, and science fiction. The winner will receive their Brighton Fringe registration fee repaid by Ironclad Creative CIC, a production mentoring session with Ironclad Creative, and at least 6 social media posts about your event by Ironclad Creative CIC.
