ARTIST OBSERVER TO THE BOARD
Since 2020, an Artist Observer to the Board has attended Brighton Fringe board meetings to improve the organisation's transparency and ensure artist voices are represented. The term for the current Artist Observer is coming to an end and we’re re-opening the process for self-nominations, with the aim to have the new Artist Observer in post in time for our upcoming Board Meeting on Monday 23 March 2026. We are open to job share applications of up to two people sharing this role. The Artist Observer to the Board of Brighton Fringe will work alongside the Venue Observers in bringing ideas and recommendations of the Artists and Venues of Brighton Fringe to the Board. This role is unpaid.

- Board member announced to public: Thursday 16 March 2026
Responsibilities
- Act in the interests of all Brighton Fringe artists
- Attend all quarterly board meetings - two hours quarterly, Monday or Thursday evenings in March, July, September and December.
- Ensure that at least two weeks prior to each board meeting that they seek feedback from any other artists and have collected any points of raising on behalf of venues (Brighton Fringe staff will help with the administration of this process) and notify the Brighton Fringe CEO/Chair of any suggested additions to the subsequent board meeting agenda.
- Produce a board meeting report (Min. 250 words) after each board meeting to be shared with the Brighton Fringe team and artists/venue managers where necessary.
- Co-moderate the Brighton Fringe Networking Group on Facebook.
Conditions of becoming an observer on the Brighton Fringe Board:
- The observer should have taken part in Brighton Fringe at least once previously, and within the last five years
- The observer term is one year, and runs from March- February. The observer term is one year, and runs from March- February
- The observer can be re-elected and serve up to two consecutive terms (of up to two years maximum) but cannot be re-elected for a third consecutive term. They can be elected for any number of terms within these parameters.
Recruitment Process
- Artists put themselves forward as candidates via this Microsoft form, including a short profile about them and their motivations for joining as an observer to the board
- Self-nominations will close at 11:59 Wednesday 18 February and is limited to one candidate per artist.
- The list of candidates will be advertised in e-newsletters and through social media (the private Artists group). Voting on candidates is via a Microsoft form and is open to all artists.
- Voting will open Friday 20 February and close Friday 6 March 2026, midday. Voting is anonymous to other Artists, although Brighton Fringe will be able to see the votes to remove any duplicates.
- The vote will be ratified by the board and announced in time for the 23 March board meeting; assuming ratification, the venue manager in receipt of the most votes will be invited as an observer on the board of Brighton Fringe for this meeting.
