Awards

This year's Brighton Fringe Awards will be held on Sunday 2 June. During the ceremony, a number of awards will be handed out by Brighton Fringe sponsors and partners.

Each award has its own criteria, some you will be able to self nominate for, others you will be automatically selected for. All the Brighton Fringe 2024 awards are listed below, with information on how to enter, and what the prize entails.

AUDIENCE CHOICE AWARD: best brighton fringe event

Supported by Chichester Festival Theatre. The Audience Choice Awards are different from other awards because they are voted for by the people who have bought tickets and paid to see your events! 

Winners will receive:

  • A free registration to take part in Brighton Fringe 2025.
  • A marketing package for Brighton Fringe 2025, worth £500.
  • Mentoring from Chichester Festival Theatre to develop their work.

Ticket buyers will be prompted to vote for these categories in their feedback emails.

Audience choice award winners are calculated by (volume of votes)/(total capacity of events).

AUDIENCE CHOICE AWARD: best brighton fringe venue

The Audience Choice Awards are different from other awards because they are voted for by the people who have bought tickets and paid to see your events! 

Winners will receive:

  • A marketing package for Brighton Fringe 2024, worth up to £500.
  • A plaque to display in your venue.

Ticket buyers will be prompted to vote for these categories in their feedback emails.

Audience choice award winners are calculated by (volume of votes)/(total capacity of events).

THE PEBBLE TRUST INTERNATIONAL TOURING BURSARY (OUTGOING)

This award is for participants who are residents in Brighton & Hove, East Sussex or West Sussex with tour-ready work only. The work that is toured must be in-person so we require applications from in-person events. The prize will enable you to tour to an international festival and includes up to £3,000 towards travel, accommodation and other related touring costs, to be used within 18 months of Brighton Fringe 2024 finishing.

Judges from Brighton Fringe, World Fringes and The Pebble Trust will select the shows based on the application, create a shortlist and then attend each event before announcing their winner at the awards ceremony.

FARNHAM MALTINGS EMERGING ARTIST/COMPANY AWARD

Farnham Maltings is a cultural organisation based in south west surrey with a regional, national and international reach. This award is for emerging artists and companies, those who consider themselves early to mid career artists/companies.

Farnham Maltings are offering the following as part of their inaugural award:

- up to £2,000 cash prize to develop their work.

- Mentoring sessions with the Farnham Maltings team and house South East touring network.

- An opportunity to perform at their new Farnham Fringe Festival or within Farnham Maltings programme.

- A Brighton Fringe 2025 registration fee.

To be eligible for the award you must:

- Be an early to mid career artist/company.

- Your work must be an original piece (adaptions will not be considered).

- Your work must be based in theatre and storytelling (this includes comedy based in theatre, children's theatre and physical theatre).

- You must consider yourself to be a theatremaker/s.

Judges from Brighton Fringe and Farnham Maltings will select a shortlist of events based on your application. Judges will then attend shortlisted events, a winner will be selected and announced at the Brighton Fringe Awards on 2 June 2024.

WOODFIRE CAMPING'S BEST OF BRIGHTON COMEDY AWARD

This award is open to all events categorised in the 'comedy' genre, whether stand-up, sketch, alternative or clowning. 

Winners will receive:

  • A free registration to Brighton Fringe 2025.
  • A marketing package for Brighton Fringe 2025 worth £500.

Self-nominate your event via the link below, events will then be shortlist by a panel of comedy performers, producers and industry professionals. The winner will be announced at the Brighton Fringe Award Ceremony on 2 June.

SPIRIT OF THE FRINGE AWARD IN ASSOCIATION WITH RED LEG RUM

The Spirit of the Fringe Award is given each year to someone who has made an outstanding contribution to Brighton Fringe. Traditionally, it has been selected by the Brighton Fringe CEO but this year we are asking the Fringe community to nominate who they think is most deserving of this award.

The winner will receive:

  • A free registration to take part in Brighton Fringe 2025.
  • A platinum Friends of Fringe membership for one year.
  • A gift package courtesy of Red Leg rum.

The nominated people will be shortlisted by the Brighton Fringe team, and the winner selected by the Interim Managing Director of Brighton Fringe alongside the Board of Trustees.

GEMINI DESIGN FOR PRINT AWARD

The Design for Print Awards has been running for many years to celebrate the important graphic design skills that produce effective communication and promotion about the Brighton Fringe. It is sponsored and managed by the Gemini Print Group. In 2024 all award decisions will be made by a panel of design experts from Gemini Print Group.

The winner of the Design for Print Award 2024:

  • Will be awarded £200 for printing and artwork services from the Gemini Print Group.
  • A free Brighton Fringe 2025 registration.

Nominations will close on Sunday 26 May at 11.59pm.

GOLD ARTS JEWELLERY COMMUNITY EVENT AWARD

Gold Arts are proud to present the Community Event Award at this year's Brighton Fringe. 

This award is open to any artist, company or organisation whose Brighton Fringe event:

  • Engages with the local community.
  • Is organised by and/or benefits a community group or organisation.
  • Connects with a community based theme or topic.

The winner will receive:

  • A Brighton Fringe 2025 registration.
  • A marketing package worth up to £250 for Brighton Fringe 2025.

Self-nominate via the link below. Applications will be shortlisted by the Gold Arts and Brighton Fringe teams. The winner will be announced at the Brighton Fringe Awards ceremony on 2 June.

laine pub co. best newcomer award

Laine Pub Co. are looking to award this year's best Brighton Fringe Newcomer. Criteria for this award is:

  • It must be the first time your event or production has appeared at Brighton Fringe.

Newcomers will be shortlisted from your Eventotron registration by the Brighton Fringe team in collaboration with Laine Pub Co. Judges will then attend the events and announce their winner at the award ceremony.

Winners will receive:

  • A free registration for Brighton Fringe 2025.
  • Opportunities to perform within their London and Brighton venues.
  • A marketing package for Brighton Fringe 2025 worth £150.

The winner will be announced at the Brighton Fringe Awards on the 2 June.

BRighton Girls family friendly event award

Our friends at Brighton Girls will be awarding their Family-Friendly award at our award ceremony on 2 June 2024. A shortlist will be selected by the Brighton Girls staff team and those events will be attended and judged by both staff and pupils.  

 

The prize for this award is:

A free registration for Brighton Fringe 2025.

Marketing support from Brighton Girls.

A free rehearsal space in Brighton Girls' state of the art studio pods.

 

The winner will be announced at the Brighton Fringe Awards on the 2 June.

Lauren Varnfield award for theatre

Longtime Fringe champion, Roger Kay, is judging this Memorial Award in honour of his colleague and friend who passed away last year, Lauren Varnfield.

There is no self-nomination process for this event, all theatre events are elegible for this award. A shortlist for this award will be created by Roger Kay and his colleagues, with the winner announced at the Brighton Fringe award ceremony.

The winner will receive:

  • £250 cash prize to develop your work.
  • Show development mentoring by Roger Kay.
  • A free registration for Brighton Fringe 2025.

The winner will be announced at the Brighton Fringe Awards on the 2 June.

SOUTH EAST DANCE AWARD FOR THE MOST SURPRISING DANCE PERFORMANCE

South East Dance are offering an award to a show which centres heavily around dance, whether its main genre is Dance or Circus & Physical Theatre. 

The award committee will view dance-based shows throughout Brighton Fringe 2024, and decide upon the most surprising performance to win their award. Shows do not need to apply for this award, the award committee will instead attend dance-based shows that meet their criteria.

The winner of the South East Dance Most Surprising Dance Performance award will be given:

  • A week’s free space in The Dance Space.
  • A mentoring/advice session with the South East Dance team
  • A bottle of bubbly.
  • A free registration for Brighton Fringe 2025.

The winner will be announced at the Brighton Fringe Awards on the 2 June.

THE FRINGEREVIEW OUTSTANDING THEATRE AWARD

There's no need to apply for an award from FringeReview. In fact, they actively ask you not to pitch your show for the award. Their awards aren't based on an application process, rather it all comes down to the views of the review team. If a reviewer believes a show is worthy of an award, it is then re-seen by another reviewer or reviewers. If the award is confirmed, the company will be notified of their success.

Winners receive:

  • A limited-edition Fringe Review golden teapot.
  • A free registration for Brighton Fringe 2025.

The winner will be announced at the Brighton Fringe Awards on the 2 June.

BRIGHTON FRINGE EXHIBITIONS AWARD IN ASSOCIATION WITH ARTIST OPEN HOUSES

The Brighton Fringe Exhibitions Award in Association with Artist Open Houses returns for 2024.

All exhibitions are automatically entered for this award, and will be attend to by the Artist Open Houses team througout the Fringe.

Winners will receive:

  • A free registration for Brighton Fringe 2025.
  • A marketing package for Brighton Fringe 2025 worth £250.

The winner will be announced at the Brighton Fringe award ceremony on 2 June.

supajam EDUCATION outstanding neurodiverse performance

More than 160 performers have identified as being neurodiverse – the largest number ever recorded in the history of the Fringe.

To celebrate, a new award, sponsored by Brighton’s leading specialist music college, Supajam has been established to recognise outstanding talent amongst neurodiverse performers. It is hoped that new Brighton Fringe Outstanding Neurodivergent Award sponsored by SupaJam Education will highlight the role that performance and music plays in inspiring people with neurodiversity.  

A shortlist of neurodiverse events will be created by the Brighton Fringe and Supajam teams and events visited by judges. The winner will be announced at the Brighton Fringe Awards ceremony on 2 June.

A free registration for Brighton Fringe 2025. 

A marketing package for Brighton Fringe 2025 worth £250.

The winner will be announced at the Brighton Fringe award ceremony on 2 June.
