It started with an offer of a gherkin on a bench during lunchtime, it ended with a relationship that dragged well beyond it's sell-by date. Gary adores Annie but he absolutely has to leave her. Annie "quite likes" Gary but really shouldn't have ever entered a relationship with him in the first place. It's obvious to everyone that they need to part ways, but sometimes real life just gets in the way; why would you dump somebody you're still so, well, 'comfortable' with?
