“When I was a child I dreamt of happily ever after. When I was 27 my dreams came true. Somewhere along the way, I realised my dreams were not my own.” That’s Just The Way It’s (un)Done is an abstract autobiographical theatrical cabaret that dances through the dangers of heteronormative conditioning into a world of queer fluidity.
Join Rowan For Now as they explore what it means to outgrow yourself – shedding the skins of strict narratives and peeling back everything they knew to be true. Through nostalgic imagery, storytelling, lip-sync, humour, and chaos, Rowan reveals the freedom and grief that emerge when normative paradigms begin to unravel.
Developed as part of Rowan’s MA in Queer Performance, this piece continues to evolve, much like its creator. This iteration is both a performance and a process, part ritual, part revelation. It invites audiences into an experience of untangling and reimagining. A queer Happily Never After.

It was visceral and transporting. The command of space and energy is truly impressive.
