What most struck David Benedictus as he set about writing another ten Christopher Robin and Winnie-the-Pooh stories was how cheerful the originals were and are. Most modern children’s stories are gloomy in the extreme – consider Watership Down, Harry Potter and the Philip Pullman trilogy for starters, and then observe how nice the animals in Milne’s original tales are to one another, and how cheerful. But David also observed that in all the stories there was only one female character, which Really Doesn’t Do, so he added another. Which was she? Come along and find out.
