Event Description

Opus Clavicembalisticum is perhaps Sorabji’s best known work, even if more talked about than played until the 1980s. Its twelve movements in three parts occupy at least 4¼ hours in performance. Replete with coruscating counterpoint, vehement virtuosity and irrepressible invention, “OC” throws down some of the most hair-raising challenges in the entire piano repertoire. It is, without question, a milestone in the history of the piano. The concert's duration will be approximately 5 and a half hours, to include 4 intervals. Free local parking available on request. Please contact the church.

Event Description

Much-loved guitarist, Paul Gregory, returns to perform a solo recital of J. S. Bach's 4 Lute Suites performed on the guitar. Apparent to the listener are the French ouvertures, the improvisatory Preludiums, the graceful dance rhythms of the Sarabandes, Menuets and Bourees, as well as the more lively Gigues. Yet great pathos lies within the minor sonority of 3 of the 4 Suites. The compostitional skill here is truly outstanding, with Bach blending divine inspiration into his music with one accord. Father, Son and Holy Ghost thematically woven in. Complimentary local parking available by request.

St Michael's is pleased to welcome the return of pianist Stefan Warzycki. He is gifted enough to be able to present to us the opportunity to experience an extremely rare performance of all 12 Op. 10 Chopin-Godowsky left-hand studies [hardly ever performed in concert on account of their great difficulty] interspersed with Brahms's noble piano arrangement of  the Bach D minor Chaconne and works by Federico Mompou and Frank Bridge. Leopold Godowsky was one of history's most brilliant pianists, who harnessed the ability to reshape and reform existing works. Free parking available on request.
